OLDER INFORMATION
OCTOBER 10, 2024
Expect to see crews on site over the next few weeks completing landscaping work; they will also install flashing beacons at the crosswalk that will eventually connect the pedestrian path to the Schaumburg Metra Station. Crews will also complete cleanup and a few remaining tasks along the roadway. Please watch for crews and short-term lane closures. Most of the work is outside the pavement, but some tasks still need trucks to offload equipment/material.

The new Rodenburg Road opens to traffic tomorrow afternoon! Since closing the road seven months ago, crews removed the old roadway, installed a new storm sewer system, created the new base, installed two layers of stone, installed curb/gutter and created the new asphalt roadway. In the past month, we resurfaced from Timberleaf Circle South to Central Avenue. In the past week, we installed the new pavement markings and signs. The connection with the Roselle and Schaumburg pedestrian paths provides walkers/cyclists a safe path across the Metra/CPKC railroad tracks. There is still some work to complete. Crews must install the remaining landscaping and new roadway lighting system from the railroad north to Irving Park Road.

Crews will install the final layer of asphalt tomorrow. There will be short delays as crews pass each cross street. The material must be compacted and cooled before allowing traffic on it. We work diligently to make sure the compactors cross each side street right behind the asphalt paver. Please watch closely for flaggers and follow their directions. The asphalt is upwards of 320º when it arrives to the project; we do not want that material sticking to your tires or shoes. The flaggers are there to help keep crews, you and your vehicle safe. The roadway remains closed to traffic. Pavement marking and sign installation crews are scheduled for next week. Pavement marking work is very weather-dependent. We will open the road to traffic after all the pavement markings and signs are in place.

Crews installed a thin layer of asphalt material and are raising the utility structures to the final surface grade. Please use extra caution as you drive around those structures; they are two inches higher than the surrounding pavement. Crews will be installing the new traffic signal detection loops in the southbound lanes at Central Avenue on Saturday, September 21 starting at 8am. There are a few more items of work to finish before installing the final roadway surface. Crews will complete more of the landscaping along the edges of the roadway, finish a few concrete curb and median items and install the new fences along the Schaumburg Regional Airport and south of the railroad along the pedestrian path. The roadway remains closed to traffic; we are actively scheduling its reopening.

We completed the vast majority of the available curb and gutter installation throughout the reconstruction portion of the project. We also installed the new medians at the railroad crossing; the medians are an integral part of the system we will install to return this to a ‘Quiet Crossing.’
Next week, you will see crews removing the rest of the existing pavement at Irving Park Road. Following that, we will begin installing the new asphalt roadway. The road will remain closed to all traffic between the Airport Access Road and Timberleaf Circle for some time. We will complete the pedestrian path, landscaping, permanent signing, roadway lighting and pavement marking before we can safely move traffic to the new pavement.
The resurfacing work south of Timberleaf Circle to Central Avenue will be our last operation before installing the final new roadway surface.

Crews will be on site early Tuesday and Wednesday next week to avoid the predicted high temperatures. We will be installing the new concrete curbs Tuesday and complete any remaining work Wednesday. Expect to see crews on site at 5AM with concrete trucks following shortly after. The concrete mixers do not have tailgates to bang, so noise should be limited to their engines and mix drums along with the engine of the curb machine. We will let crews know to be as quiet as possible during the early hours. We check the temperatures of the delivered concrete mix. When it rises above 90 degrees, we must suspend operations. We are trying to get as much work possible done before the freshly mixed concrete rises above that 90-degree threshold.

Expect to see the contractor’s crews preparing the roadway for the new curb and medians. We are aiming to have concrete trucks on site early next week. We also completed the stone base for the new asphalt pedestrian path in all the available areas. We know it will look inviting for walks and bike rides, but it will not be connected to the rail crossing nor the existing path system for quite some time. Metra completed their work and the new crossing gates are operational. They have a few weeks of track work left to complete connections to the rail signals east and west of Rodenburg.

Metra will be working Saturday and Sunday this weekend between 6AM and 6PM. They will complete the work required to ‘commission’ the new railroad crossing gates for both the roadway and the pedestrian path. We expect most of their work will be confined to testing the equipment in their signal house and making sure connections are working east/west of the crossing to the nearby track signals. Expect to see contractor crews continue adding aggregate and grading the roadway in preparation for the concrete curbs and medians. To recap the storm sewer work, here are a few numbers:
SAFETY REMINDER: This is a CLOSED construction site. It is NOT SAFE for drivers/vehicles/pedestrians to go around the Road Closed signs onto the stone/dirt. Crews do not expect private vehicles/pedestrians. The broken concrete is dangerous for bike/car tires. Please avoid the site and use alternate routes.

The Federal Railroad Administration informed us the existing ‘Quiet Crossing’ established at the Metra/CPKC railroad tracks and Rodenburg Road is not valid during the construction of the new roadway. All the rail traffic on these tracks is required to sound their horns as they cross the roadway.
The ‘Quiet Crossing’ will be reinstated when we complete the roadway and install all the safety gear required by the Illinois Commerce Commission and Federal Railroad Administration. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience; neither the Villages nor the designers were aware the ‘Quiet Crossing’ was in jeopardy during construction as the roadway itself is closed to public traffic.

The vertical wick drain installation should start Monday, November 13. These drains help water migrate out of the soils below the new roadway and multi-use path as we add embankment. The new roadway base will compress the soils below and force water up and out. We will also install a series of concrete grout columns along the east side of Rodenburg to further support the new embankments. Once those two tasks are done, you will see trucks filled with clay embankment material and compaction equipment as we build those new slopes.
